"All
men make mistakes, but married men find out
about them sooner.”
-Red Skelton-
Once again, hello Boundary County … a small mea
culpa might be in order, as I was taken to task
by a reader who thought I was anti-internet.
Far from it, dear lady, as the Heartburn of last
report simply focused on Facebook and Twitter …
not internet in general. In fact;
I think the search engines (Google and Bing) are
the finest thing since sliced bread. When I
think of my dad giving up hard earned money to
purchase me a set of encyclopedias when I was in
grade school, I often pause and think of what I
could have done with Google on my side way back
when. Good old days? Not so good after all.
Ever heard the term: “buy you books and buy you
books, and all you do is look at the pictures?”
That was my dad’s favorite line every time he
reviewed my report card. Do they still have
report cards? Do you still have to get your
parents to sign them? Oh the trauma they caused
me.
Heartburn for this ramble:
Here is the scenario … You are driving slowly
through the parking lot looking for a slot to
pull into when; there directly in front of you
and dead center in the traffic lane, is a person
with a cell phone jammed against their head
marching along staring at their feet and once in
a while raising their free hand to add emphasis
to some profound point they want to make. You’re
barley moving and the head with the cell phone
is still plowing along oblivious to what is
going on around them. Sound familiar?
O.K. you are a responsible driver and do your
best to comply with traffic laws and in the
foregoing scenario you are aware of the law
which stipulates pedestrians have the right
away. A law based on the simple fact steel
trumps human flesh.
Are you tempted to nudge them just slightly?
Honk your horn? Scream at them to “Hang the ….
Up!” … maybe you have considered all three
options at one time or another. This is not
really a onetime incident, and I’m betting the
scenario I’ve painted above has happened to you
on numerous occasions.
We’re supposed to share the road good people,
but this walking and jabbering on a cell phone
is causing some real heartburn with a lot of
folks. If I’m courteous enough not to yell at
you or try to hit you with my bumper (just a
small nudge) I ask that you wait to make your
call AFTER you’ve safely navigated out of the
parking lot. It is a lot more fun to go into the
store and block an aisle with your shopping cart
than tempting fate in the parking lot.
Love the fall! This has to be our finest season
of the year as we witness the transition from
summer to winter. What will the winter bring
this year?
Take care of yourself so you can take care of
those who need you.
