Moose Madness:  here's what it's all about
December 18, 2014
by Katie Colson

Walk into the Bonners Ferry High School on any other week and you would see students going about their day, dressed in an eclectic mix of the latest North Idaho fashions. But on Moose Madness week, you will see students decked out each day in the most unique of outfits.

Moose Madness is a competition of spirit, zeal, money-raising, wrestling and of course, basketball between Bonners Ferry High School and Sandpoint High School. In the week leading up to the grand event, students raise money in a competition between the grades and staff, with the ultimate goal of besting Sandpoint in money raised per student. Tickets to this epic showdown are in hot demand, and unfortunately sold out on Tuesday.

Each day this week, the students have dressed in a different style. On Monday, the students wore red, white, and blue. Tuesday, it was twin day. Students dressed in matching flannel pajamas, as minions, and many more. On Wednesday, students wore the ugliest sweaters dug from the back of closets, and hastily picked up from thrift stores. Thursday, right before the epic showdown, students will be wearing all the blue and white they possess.

Tuesday evening, Bonners and Sandpoint wrestlers competed in the B-cup. The B-cup is the wrestling version of Moose Madness, with the winner gaining points towards Moose Madness. Bonners wrestlers fought valiantly against the larger Sandpoint team, only just barely losing to them. The close win will only give Sandpoint a few points toward the main event.

On Friday afternoon, the showdown will take place. Sandpoint and Bonners will face off in a boys and girls basketball game, a decibel test to see which school has the most noise making skill, the bands will compete to see which has the most spirit and pumps the crowd up more. The dance team and cheerleaders compete in an all-out battle of skill. Both schools also put together stomp routines consisting of garbage can drums, student-created dance routines, and lots of cheering. A student from each school also creates a moose-themed portrait to display at the game and during the rest of the school year.

Moose Madness began in 2009. Bonners went into the 2011 Moose Madness as the reigning champ, but lost the title and has fought to regain it every year since. Morale at the school is high. Students are determined to put an end to the Sandpoint winning streak! Currently, Sandpoint is beating Bonners with the money raised per student, but students have pulled out all the stops, contributing much of their own money, and thinking of creative new fundraising idea. One of those ideas was a Pie-in-the-face fundraiser. Students can pay five dollars and pie any teacher, who volunteered, in the face.

To the winner goes the spoils, and the spoils of Moose Madness include a Moose rack, decorated on one side with Bonners’ colors, and the other with Sandpoint’s, and of course, bragging rights. The rack has been missing from its rightful place at BFHS for far too long. Bonners Ferry High School is chomping at the bit for the chance show Sandpoint how Spirit, Basketball, Dance, Stomp, Band, and Cheerleading, are done and take the rack back home!
