The Badger baseball team lost a heartbreaker to
the Timberlake Tigers in the District 1-2 3A
baseball championship by a score of 3-1 on
Tuesday.
Bonners
Ferry started the scoring in the bottom of the
first inning after Jesse Dunham walked and later
scored on a RBI double from Steve Anzalone. In
the top of the 4th inning with one out,
Timberlake’s Wyatt Howard walked and Gage Wells
reached base on an error from the pitcher. Seth
Villanpando then reached base on an error from
the second baseman to load the bases. Howard
scored on a passed ball to tie the game 1-1. Ty
George then hit a 2 run single to score Wells
and Villanpando, putting Timberlake ahead with
the score 3-1.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, Shay Garcia
walked to start the inning. After a pop out from
Vince Bennett, Caleb Blackmore reached on an
error from the Tiger shortstop. Pinch hitter
Kevin Gray struck out for two outs in the inning
and then Nick Sabin reached on a walk to load
the bases. Leadoff hitter Brady Bateman came up
to bat and hit a grounder to the shortstop to
end the game.
The Badgers had many opportunities in the game
to take the lead leaving bases loaded three
times in the game and a total of 15 runners
stranded. Pitcher Vince Bennett pitched a great
game allowing only 2 hits while striking out
five, walking three batters, and not allowing an
earned run.
The Badgers will play a loser-out game at home
on Thursday against the Kellogg Wildcats. Game
time is 4:00 p.m. Winner of that game advances
to the state play-in game in Grangeville this
Saturday.
The All-League players were announced prior to
the game and Bonners Ferry had four players that
were chosen. Seniors Shay Garcia and Steve
Anzalone, Junior Vince Bennett and Freshman
Brady Bateman. Steve Anzalone received
All-League MVP honors.
In addition, BFHS Head Baseball Coach Tom Turpin
was named Intermountain League coach of the
year.
