Badger boys off to state |
February 28, 2014 |
The Bonners Ferry Badger boys basketball team
earned a trip to state Thursday evening,
traveling to Timberlake and downing the Tigers
36-33 in a loser-out game decided at the free
throw line with only 35 seconds left on the
clock. The Badgers outscored the Tigers 16-10 in the first quarter, but both teams scored six and seven points consecutively in the second and third quarters, and Timberlake closed to a tie in the final quarter. The Badgers didn't seal the win until a mere 34 seconds remained, when Kyler Rice was fouled on a jumper but made the shot, putting te Badgers back in the lead by one bucket. Rice sank his free throw and the Badgers kept control of the ball to the final buzzer. Timberlake's Keegan Scott had an outstanding game, the only player on either side to reach double digits with 19 points, but that advantage was narrowly edged by the Badgers' steadier, more balanced attack. Now 11-10 on the season, the Badgers will face Filer in the State 3-A tournament tomorrow, March 1, in McCall, with tip-off at 2 p.m. Pacific Time. At just over 350 miles and an estimated seven hours away if you go the shortest route to McCall High School, Badger fans can make the game to cheer on their team, even though the roads might be a little bit less than perfect. You may need to get up a bit early to allow the bit of extra time you'll need, but the trip will be well worth the winks lost. |
