Lady Badgers take down CdA Charter, boys

The Bonners Ferry Lady Badgers chalked up a road
win Tuesday night, defeating Coeur d'Alene
Charter handily, 55-26. The Badger boys
struggled through the first half, and though
they caught up in the second and forced
overtime, they couldn't overcome the scrappy
Panthers, and fell 41-38.
The Lady Badgers dominated their match from the
outset, outscoring the Panthers in all but the
final quarter, and then only by a single point.
Led by Aubree Wasmer, who tossed up nine points,
the Lady Badgers led 12-4 at the end of the
first quarter, 26-11 at the half and 44-14 after
their best quarter of play on the night, the
third.
The Panthers tried to rally in the fourth, but
the Badgers kept their stride, scoring 11 points
to the Panthers 12.
Scoring for the Badgers was well spread among
all the athletes, with Kendra Merritt and Jaiden
Everhart both putting up eight points, Jasmine
Hill shooting for seven, Kerstin Oxford putting
up six, Abby Skeen and Savannah Woods each
hitting four, McKenzie MacDonald hitting two and
Desi Minor scoring a point.
"CdA came out in an extened 1-3-1 zone, and we
struggled adjusting to it early on," said boys
head coach Clint Arthur. "We were stagnant
with both man and ball movement, and CdA's
scrappy play caused us to turn the ball over too
much."
It was a rough first half for the Badgers, who
trailed 16-6 in the first quarter and 25-9 going
into the locker room, but they were able to
regroup and fight back in the second.
"We made a few adjustments at halftime and we
came out looking like a different team," Arthur
said. "We moved the ball better, attacked the
basket and rebounded on the offensive end. Evan
Moe hit some big shots for us and Garrett Skeen
and Josh Pluid gave us a strong inside
presence."
The Badgers outshot the Panthers 13-4 in the
third quarter 13-6 in the fourth, with the score
tied at 35 at the end of regulation play.
"Cameron Fitch and Isaac Price came off the
bench to provide excellent defensive intensity,
playing a huge role in our second half
comeback," Arthur said. "We took great shots in
overtime and had plenty of opportunities, but
some of the shots just didn't fall."
The Panthers put up six points in overtime to
the Badgers three to clinch the win.
Moe led the Badger scoring drive with 13 points,
Cameron Woods put up 10, Skeen shot for six,
Price four, Fitch three and Pluid two.
Both the boys and girls are at home Saturday to
take on Lakeland; the girl's varsity game starts
at 4:15 p.m., the boys varsity at 6:30 p.m. |
