Running with the goats

September 20, 2011 |
The Farragut/Super-1 Cross Country Invitational
hosted by Lake City High School includes a
feature infamously named the Goat Hill. Right
across Pend Oreille's Idlewilde Bay, real
mountain goats might be seen negotiating the
cliffs that rise straight out of the water.
For the hundreds of athletes in the races, the
challenge is getting out fast on a course that
narrows considerably in the first mile, yet
maintaining a pace that leaves some energy for
the hill, which comes after the two-mile mark.
The reward: 800 meters of downhill to the
finish.
The race combines runners from all divisions,
but the small and large schools are separated
for awards and scoring.
At this year's meet, with some 30 schools in
attendance, it meant competing against runners
from Coeur d'Alene H.S. and Washington's
University High, Riverside, and Lakeside as well
as Montana's Polson and Eureka.
In the small schools division (fewer than 800
students), the Badger boys took third, with
seniors Micah Krmpotich (1st) and Jacob
Callister (4th) strong up front and Bradley
Thompson, Jacob Perkins, Tyson Boorman, Jake
Stimmel, and Jared Lysne strong in the pack.
Said Callister, "It felt good to pass so many
people in the last 300M on that downhill."
In the boys J.V., Luke Reoch came back from a
bout with the flu to race well and work his way
back on varsity for the next meet. Alec Perkins,
Tucker Cavender, and Zack Sabin filled out the
rest of the J.V. roster.
In the girls varsity, the Badgers continued to
contend with injuries and absences, although
Coach Paul Bonnell noted that individually the
girls are improving and recovering.
"Aimee Sayers is coming into competitive form,
and Jordan Merz is getting healthier," he said.
"Katy Hiatt and Nonnie Stofiel know what they
need to do as we head into the last month before
Districts. Elise Couplet is starting to figure
out her strategy. It will be good to have Lily
York back for next week."
Saturday, September 24, the Badgers race at the
Erik Anderson Invitational at Plantes Ferry in
Spokane, another highly competitive meet that
will also include a sizable collegiate field, as
it will be the site of the NCAA Division II
regional championships this year.
