Alternative chosen for Deer Creek project

Idaho Panhandle Forest Supervisor Mary Farnsworth is pleased to announce she has signed the decision, selecting alternative 2, for the Deer Creek Project located on the Bonners Ferry Ranger District. Alternative 2 provides for the greatest amount of restoration opportunities of all the alternatives, which helps steer the forest towards desired conditions as described in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests 2015 Land Management Plan. This decision provides for an array of treatments that enhance forest resiliency, reduce hazardous fuels, improve aquatic resource conditions, and contain or control non-native invasive plant populations. The decision will also maintain and improve recreation facilities, manage the extensive road system within the project area, and contribute to the local economy through utilization of forest products. Collaboration with the Kootenai Valley Resource Initiative and other interested groups and individuals was critical in developing the proposed action and in shaping the final decision. This collaboration led to a project that will treat vegetation on approximately 4,200 acres, make improvements to the Solomon Lake Campground, provide snowmobile parking on the Deer Creek Road, and perform maintenance and reconstruction on nearly 43 miles of road utilized by the public.
