UI High School Journalism Workshop to be held in CdA

North Idaho high school journalism students can get hands-on experience in reporting or design during a workshop sponsored by the University of Idaho’s School of Journalism and Mass Media May 19 in Coeur d’Alene. The annual UI High School Journalism Workshop is open to high school juniors, seniors and teachers interested in getting hands-on experience with design, broadcast or print news. Cost is $10 per person. It is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 19, at UI Coeur d’Alene, N1031 Academy Way, Coeur d’Alene. “Normally, this event has been held in Moscow, but this year, we wanted to take this opportunity into the communities where more students live, making it easier for them to attend,” said Rebecca Tallent, workshop director and associate professor of journalism in UI’s College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. “In these days of fake news and alternative facts, having professionals assist with hands-on experience in gathering and reporting news, plus information in design, can help young people become better news consumers.” Attendees will select one of three tracks to learn about during the day: design, broadcasting and journalism. Gary Lundgren, associate director at the National Scholastic Press Association, will lead the design track; UI journalism student Destiny Alvarez will lead the ethics section, and Tallent, a former business reporter, will teach the journalism track. There will also be a section for broadcast news. Teachers in attendance will also have the opportunity to review legal issues related to high school journalism.
