By the Alpha+ Business Team Bonners Ferry High School FIRST Robotics Team 2130 Alpha+ recently returned from Calgary, Alberta, after competing in the Western Canada Regional. This year teams competed from Turkey, Poland, China, Australia, Mexico, Canada, and the United States. The event was a celebration of diversity and the universal language of STEM was spoken by all participants. At the Opening Ceremonies, each country’s National Anthem was sung by team representatives. Alpha+ team member Rayan Naylor, accompanied by four Michigan team members, sang the Star Spangled Banner. All team members were active participants during the event, scouting for alliance selection, analyzing data, working as pit crew, giving presentations to judges, meeting other teams, photographing the event and joining Buddy Badger in a spirited display of support. The drive team worked its calm, focused magic and with our exceptionally performing robot, advanced our standing to 10th place at the end of qualification matches. Our robot’s reliable gear collector, speed across the field and elegant climber contributed greatly to each match. During the playoffs alliance selection, Alpha+ was chosen by the second ranked team, 4627 Manning Robotics. Along with Team 5630 Canada Crew, the alliance performed well, making it to the semi-finals. For the second time, Alpha+ received the Entrepreneurship Award sponsored by venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers. This award recognizes a team that has “developed the framework for a comprehensive business plan to scope, manage and achieve team objectives.” To further enhance our trip, team members visited the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre at Crowsnest Pass and the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology in Drumheller, AB. Competition season may be over, but our team’s passion for robotics continues. Look for our demonstrations at the Farmers Market, County Fair and other community events. Team members are currently making plans for our second annual Summer Robotics Camp. Further information will follow soon! Alpha+ would like to thank our wonderful community for its ongoing support and looks forward to representing Badger pride again at next year’s competition! |
