Use your zip code to attract birds
April 6, 2017
With the slow, stop-and-start inching of spring, it's not only warmer temperatures that enlivens us, but the return of our feathered friends coming back to summer from their winter havens in warmer climes.

If you're one of the many who take delight in seeing birds frolicking and flitting in your yard, the Audubon Society website, www.audubon.org, recently launched a new native plants data base that, just by typing in your zip code, will help you to identify native flora you can plant as well as the types of birds they'll attract, and why.

Typing in 83845, the Moyie Springs zip code, brought up a full list of 105 native plant species that are easy to find at area nurseries, that look great in your yard or property, that are relatively easy to grow in this region and that will give our local bird species a warm welcome back or a cozy place for those hardier varieties that over-winter here.

The first plants to appear are the best results, 32 species here in Moyie, ranging from trees to shrubs to flowers, and a view of the birds that will be attracted. There's a brief description of the species as well as a set of tags that tell at a glance the type plant, be it tree, shrub, annual/perennial, and what it is that attracts the birds; nuts, seeds, nectar, insects for food and more.

Along with each plant species is a check box, "add to your plant list," that will send you, via email, more information on that variety, local and online sources of more in-depth information and a list of both local and online nurseries where that plant, tree or shrub can be purchased.

The email also allows you to tell the Audubon Society how many of those plants you intend to plant and grow, to help them tell how close they are to reaching their goal of seeing a million new bird-friendly native plants being put in the ground.
