Big events coming up at the Refuge
|
May 9, 2014 |
There is a lot of action going on these days at
the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge.
In addition to the beautiful scenery, the
peaceful and scenic perimeter drive, and the
wildlife and waterfowl one can admire on almost
any trip to the refuge, some upcoming big events
are planned.
International Migratory Bird Day is fast
approaching on Saturday, May 17. Your
participation is easy, and it's fun. Arrive at
the Refuge Educational Barn by 9 a.m.,
where a brief course will be presented making
you an expert in waterfowl
identification. Then, use your new-found skills
at the 9:30 a.m. Bird Walk around and through
the Refuge. You can stroll with the experts at
the Refuge and watch for and identify the
various waterfowl encountered.
Plan for this Bird Walk to last around two
hours. Be sure to bring your binoculars and
whatever field guide you might like. Dress
appropriately for the weather, and wear good
hiking footwear. Don't forget water for
yourself.
Did you know that 2014 is the 50th year since
the founding of the Kootenai National Wildlife
Refuge? To celebrate those 50 years, the Refuge
will sponsor a 50th anniversary celebration on
Saturday, June 21. The events begin at 9 a.m.
Highlights for the day will be an opportunity to
meet former Refuge managers, a Birds of Prey
presentation with live raptors, Kootenai
drummers, an opportunity to see slide shows
about the Refuge's history and wildlife.
And finally, going on now at the Refuge every
day: baby goslings who are being raised in the
Refuge's eagle nest. They are hatching. Bring
your binoculars to see if you can get a look, or
if you can't make it down, take a look at the
live eagle cam on www.sandpointonline.com/eagles
