Vickaryous |
News Bonners Ferry is saddened to report the
passing of community stalwart Don Vickaryous,
who collapsed May 4 during the annual Northern
Lights meeting in Sagle.
He was taken to Kootenai Medical Center, Coeur
d'Alene, where he died Monday. A vigil will be
held at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Bonners
Ferry, at 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, services will
be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18, also at St.
Ann's. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is entrusted
with the arrangements.
Don worked in the woods for many years before
the fortunes of the timber industry started to
wane, and he returned home to Bonners Ferry in
the late 1980s to develop and open Twin Rivers
Canyon Resort at the confluence of the Kootenai
and Moyie Rivers, making it one of the premier
RV resorts in the northwest.
He helped found the Bonners Ferry Chapter of
Habitat for Humanity, pitching in on several
homes built here, and for many years hosted the
annual Habitat for Humanity picnic at Twin
Rivers, where he greeted hundreds of guests and
stood behind the grill for hours.
He was an active member of the Bonners Ferry
Chamber of Commerce, working most often quietly
behind the scenes to bring many events and
activities to the community.
For the past several years, he represented
District 5 on the Northern Lights Electric Co-op
Board, this year serving as its chair.
He was active in promoting Boundary County and
in standing up to lend his voice and reason on
many of the most pressing issues we faced here,
most dealing with federal regulations that
affected jobs and access to the natural
resources our community is so rich in.
Our condolences go out to his wife, Janet, his
family and his many friends.
