To promote reading at Valley View Elementary,
Principal Gary Pflueger agreed to shave off his
rather large mustache, which he hasn't trimmed
all year, if the students met their reading
goals. They did and on March 6, off it came! The Principal Challenge is a part of the Pizza Hut "BOOK IT! Program Read Your Heart Out Quest" to turn kids who read because they have to into kids who read because they want to. As reading goals are met, teachers reward students with Reading Award Certificates. Then, when students bring their certificates to Pizza Hut, they receive praise, recognition and a free one-topping personal pan pizza. Students at Valley View reached their reading goals, and on Wednesday, March 6, Principal Pflueger had his mustache shaved off during an assembly. He asked the students questions and as they answered them correctly, former Valley View teacher Larry VanGundy took away parts of his mustache until all was gone. Thanks to all the students, Mr. Pflueger now has a “new” look. He encourages students to make smart choices in their own lives that encourage positive change. As Dr. Seuss said, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” |
