By Mike Weland Each year, hundreds of folks visiting the Boundary County Fair stop by the Eagles Aerie 3522 booth for that quintessential fair favorite, cotton candy, or a refreshingly cool snow-cone, the perfect treat on a hot summer day. Most think they're getting just that, a treat, and while that's always true, what they might not recognize is that they're also supporting many of the outstanding youth groups in Boundary County. "Some of the days down there get pretty long," said member Tom Florea, "but when you remember that every dollar goes right back to the community, you don't mind the hours." On Saturday morning, he and fellow Eagles Mel and Debbie Wood greeted quite a few of the folks all their hard work is helping this year and distributed checks totaling $2,100. "That's a lot of snow-cones and cotton candy," Tom said, though this year's proceeds were down a bit from years past. Receiving $300 checks this year were Boy Scout Troop 114, the Kootenai Valley Junior Rifle Club and Girl Scout Troop 2171. Checks for $200 each went to Girl Scout Troops 3142, 4801 and 3802, the Friends of the Arts, Boundary County Little League and to the Boundary County Fair Board. "Most people don't know that when they stop at our booth at the fair, 100-percent of what they spend is going back to the community," Tom said. "But you'd be surprised how many do know, stop in for a cotton candy and a snow-cone, give us a five dollar bill and say, 'keep the change.'" |
