Though you wouldn't know it to look at her, Carol Geeck is in her 70s. It's apparent by looking at her that she knows how to listen to her body and provide what it needs to stay healthy and vibrant; she looks years younger than her count of birthdays, and radiates a rosy, healthy glow. Crippled from birth and having fought breast cancer and won, she's well familiar with traditional medicine, having spent countless hour in physician's offices and in neurosurgery. She even studied to be a surgical nurse in the early 1960s. But she happened to hear Dr. Bernard Jensen in a health store speaking on "iridology," or the practice of looking at the iris of the eye to distinguish between healthy systems and organs in the body and those that are overactive, inflamed, or distressed. Carol stayed to listen. Through iridology, practitioners say they can tell a person's susceptibility to certain illnesses, indicate past health issues, and prevent future health problems. "You can see all the body systems through the eyes," Carol said. "You can tell genetic strengths and weaknesses, and adjust your diet and lifestyle so potential problems never become manifest." Carol left impressed by what she heard from Jensen, also known as the Father of Iridology. She undertook to learn more, and came to study several other forms of alternative medicine. In the nearly 30 years since, Carol has grown in her belief that modern medicine is more focused on treating and suppressing symptoms rather than bringing about good health. She regained good health as she studied naturopathic forms of medicine and grew in her conviction that good health, not illness, is normal; that God designed our bodies wondrously, and set in place mechanisms to let us heal. She became a long-time member of the American Naturopathic Medical Association, earned certifications by the National Board of Naturopathic Examiners and the National Iridology Practitioners Association, and earned the distinguished title of Native American Medicine Woman. Julie Smith earned her BS degree in nutrition science and strength training and she's working to become a naturopathic doctor. She's an ACE-certified personal trainer and a Rainbow facilitator. She met Carol at one of her classes on essential oils two years ago. "I was hooked," Julie said, "I had to learn more." Carol became her mentor, she said, and she remains intrigued by all Carol knows. "You can give kids a head start by recognizing genetic conditions early and adapting to them," she said. "It's interesting learning about our bodies, and knowing you don't have to get sick to see that something is wrong." Through their association was born Entirely Natural LLC, 6389 Bonner Street in downtown Bonners Ferry, dedicated to educating people on several different levels on maintaining good health, on the body's awesome ability to heal itself, and to recognizing potential health issues and learning to deal with them before trouble strikes.
