Alvarez cashes in on EAA scholarship, solos

September 14, 2011

By Ashley Glaza

Adam Alvarez
On September 2 Adam Alverez took the first solo flight of his pilot training. Adam was this year’s recipient of the EAA Youth Flight Scholarship, which has funded the first $2,000 of his flight training.

Dave Peterson of Bonners Ferry passed his private pilot exam on September 7, and Joel Cook of Creston, BC, completed his instrument rating. The instrument rating is an optional rating added to a private pilot license that allows a pilot to fly by the use of flight instruments in inclement weather.

On September 9, Max Zimmerman completed his private pilot training. Max had started his flight training at several different flight schools before coming here to finish up.

Pilots wishing to earn their commercial pilot certificate can now do so at Northern Air.

New to the Northern Air fleet is a 1963 Comanche 250 aircraft, which will be available for flight training after some modernization of the flight instruments. The Comanche is a high performance, low-wing aircraft with retractable landing gear that is required for part of commercial pilot training.

The last huckleberry pancake breakfast of the year will be held on September 24 at the Boundary County Airport. For a suggested donation of $5 you can fill your belly with a delicious breakfast and help support a young aviation enthusiast like Adam Alverez.

For more information about the flight scholarship and how to apply, check out the local EAA chapter website: www.757.eaachapter.org and click on the Scholarship link. The deadline for applications is December 1.

You’ve probably noticed the smoke in the air as a result of the fire burning 17 miles north west of Bonners Ferry. Fire fighters are setting up a base here at the Boundary County Airport, so expect to see a few extra airplanes and helicopters in the air as they work towards getting the fire under control. If you are flying in the area yourself, make sure to check for local flight restrictions.
