“I think it was a great one because there is
hardly no negative comment out there this year,”
said fair administrator Sandy Schnepf of this
year’s fair just ended. “Wow, people are amazing
aren’t they?”
Amazing people who did what is essential to any
such undertaking … they participated in just
about everything offered, including myriad fun
contests and competitions. Here are the winners
of just some of them.
In the six-years and under watermelon eating
contest, Taylor Cromwell took first prize,
followed by Bailey Cook and Dillon Mai. In the
ages 7-9 bracket, winners were Jayben Bushnell,
Cody Kerstiens and Dina Cook, 10-13 year old
winners were Jayden Bennett and April Lloyd,
J.P. Zaken and Mason Mcginnis and Tucker Dicks
and Brady Bateman. In the 14-18 division, Martha
Covington munched the most melon, followed by
Savannah Mendenhall and Jacob Callister, and
Marcus Girod claimed the prize in the 19 and
older category, followed by Luke Marble and
Jennifer Cook.
Taylor Cromwell did well in the pumpkin seed
spitting contest, too, lobbing a seed eight feet
to win the six and under bracket. Shahannah
Bushnell came in second at 5’7” and Kaylee
McCabe third at 4’7”

Earlier
Saturday, the 2011 Fair Parade made its
way through downtown Bonners Ferry,
giving Senator Shawn Keough and
Representative George Eskridge a good
chance to "drag Main!" |
In the 7-12 category, William Schultz spit a
seed an impressive 18’2” to win, Mitchell
Johnston hit 15’10” for second and Thomas Mooney
14’1” to take third. In the 13-18 category,
Tucker Dirks won with a 12’11” shot, Jake Wilson
came in second at 12’9” and Mason McGuiness
third at 12’2”. Peter Bauer was the overall
pumpkin seed spitting champion, hurling a seed
27’11” to win in the 19 and over division. Luke
Marble hit 24” for second and Marcus Girod hit
12’8” for third.
There were a bunch of winners in this year’s
Monster Cookie Contest. In the three and under
bracket, Kendra Johnson won first for best fair
theme, followed by Aiden Beggerly and Gavin
Lewandowski. Having the prettiest cookie was
Angela Johnson, followed by Bella Seley, who
took second place. Scariest cookie honors went
to Cliff Johnson, with Riley Beggerly taking
second, and most the creative cookie award went
to Ashtin Brooks, first, followed by Melissa
Johnson, second, and Kyalynn Comer, third.

of the Fair" Judy Dirks also got to ride
in a convertible on a day that was just
perfect for it. |
In the 4-5 year old bracket, Eloisa Gorina won
top honors for fair themed cookie, followed by
Marissa Beggerly. Prettiest cookie went to Josie
Delaney, first, Rory Johnson, second and
Kimberly Johnson, third. Gabe Lewandowski won
the top prize in the scariest cookie category,
followed by Russell Johnson, and Emma Tompkins
won the award for most creative, followed by
Shem Johnson and Derek Roundy.
In the 6-9 year division, Kelsey English won in
the fair theme contest, with Kayle McCabe and
Jacob Cowell taking second and third; Madison
Costa had the prettiest, followed by McKenzie
Whallon and Mary Roundy; Ray Johnson came up
with the scariest cookie, followed by Greta
Callison and Willy Wall, and Chase Whallon had
the most creative, followed by Ben Tompkins and
Ezra Delaney. In the 10-12 year old bracket, top
fair theme award went to Jacquie Cowell, April
Lloyd, second, Echo Davis, third; Edie Callison
had the prettiest cookie, with Katie Cowell
second and Jennifer Johnson third; Kadin Rice
had the scariest, followed by Ozzy Wall, and
Julene Johnson had the most creative cookie,
followed by Leilani Ram and Riley Delaney.

Kaytlinn Rice won the fair theme category in the
13-18 year division, Miranda Merrifield had the
prettiest and most creative honors went to
Austin Johnson, with Destinee Davis coming in
second. Gayle Alexander won the fair theme
category in the 19 and over division, followed
by Sharon Schnuerle and Julie Krezman. Angie
Schnuerle had the prettiest cookie, with Leona
Johnson coming in second and Svetlana Harper
third. Judy Delaney had the scariest, followed
by Barb LePoidevin, and Anne Tompkins had the
most creative cookie, followed by Kira Costa and
Linda Lopez.
Winners in the “Astro”nomical Brownie Baking
contest were Susan Newhouse, first, Nita
Hilliard, second, and Carolyn Bateman and Julie
Newhouse tying for third.
Then there was the baked goods auction.
Eunice Neumeyer baked the best yeast rolls,
purchased by Roger Fraser for $20. Best yeast
bread honors went to Paige Liermann, bought by
All-Pro for $50. Patricia Embry won in the quick
bread category and Panhandle Nursery snapped it
up for $60. Judy Delaney won the butter cakes
senior division, and Representative George
Eskridge couldn’t resist, buying it for $70, and
Isabella T. won in the junior division, and sold
her butter cake to Bonners Ferry Mayor Dave
Anderson for $90.

In keeping
with the theme of this year's fair, a
number of aliens alit in Bonners Ferry
just in time to take part in the parade.

Beth Byars won in the “I started with a mix
cake” division, and county commissioner Walt
Kirby stirred $145 loose to purchase it, and
Peggy Clark won in the Other Cakes category,
with her entry going to commissioner Ron Smith
for $165. Gina Stolley won for the best pie, and
it must have been good, because Senator Shawn
Keough paid $250 for it, and Lauren Bowlby had
the best theme cake, which commissioner Dan
Dinning purchased for $110.
Olivia Pinkerton won the best fair theme costume
category in the small pet show, and Marissa
Beggerly took best overall costume.
For the first time ever, this year’s fair
featured a paper airplane flying contest, and in
the six and under category, Kevin gave a might
toss of 25’6” to win, followed by Emma, whose
plane traveled 18 feet. In the 7-9 category, Roy
had a second-place overall toss of 41’8” for
first, Rachel threw hers 25” for second and Koe
threw 19’10” for third. In the 10-13 year old
division, Kyle had a 21 foot toss for first,
Kyle (we only got first names!) came in second
with 14” and Daniel came in third at 11 feet.
Jim had the best throw of the day to win the 19
and older class with a 43-foot effort, followed
by Dan, 31’2”, and Dave, 29’3”.

In the Reach for the Stars Prize Drawing, Kathy
Konek won first place and an apron, Anne
Tompkins won second place and an apron, Alex
Nick finished third, winning potholders, Brandon
Neuman fourth and double potholders, Linda Lopez
came in fifth and won pillowcases, Gayle
Alexander sixth, winning a handbag, Lucy Jensen
seventh, also winning a handbag, Brady Hinthorn
came in eighth, winning a goose pillow, and
Charlotte Kothe came in ninth, winning a pig
pillow.
In the Barnyard Blast Off Contest, Judith Regehr
won creative use best of class, Gayle Alexander
interpretation best of class, and honorable
mentions went to Ty Merrill, red ribbon, Josiah
and Austin Merrill, red ribbon and Isabella,
white ribbon. Shining Light awards went to
Department P, Flowers, to Superindtendent Joni
Joseph, and assistants Tess Wagner and Brenda
Liermann. Honorable mentions went to Department
N, Constructs, Barb LePoidevin, superintendent,
and to Department Q, Fruits and Nuts, Teresa
Taggart, superintendent.
Winner of best display booth was the Property
Owner’s Association, and LaMar’s Sales and
Service won the business window contest.
The general concensus of everyone polled
confirms the sense Sandy took away from the fair
once she was able to sit back and catch her
breath ... it was out of this world!
