Out in the
county, many farmers were just getting
underway with this season's harvest on
Wednesday, August 17. Combines were
running, throwing up golden clouds of
chaff as grain filled the bins. |
Meanwhile,
for the past several weeks people like
Fair Board maintenance superintendent
Roy Krohmer ... |
|
|
4-H
Supervisor Erika Thiel ... |
And
Fairboard Secretary Sandy Schnepf, along
with literally hundreds of others; fair
board members, volunteers,
consessionaires, and many more, have
been burning the midnight oil to make
sure everything was ready for opening
day. |
|
|
This year's
Fair Royalty, (l-r) Mariah Munson,
Courtney Tanner, Whitney White and Paula
Sandelin were also busy, working
tirelessly and with great poise to
ensure everyone in the community caught
the fair spirit. |
Kids from
around the county put in a lot of hours,
too, to show off this county's finest.
Kerstin Oxford raised Dixon, and put on
the final touches before showtime ... |
|
|
Shawna Siver
put the finishing touches on Hazelnut
the bunny ... |
And in one
aisle between barns, usually reserved
for putting the finishing touches on
critters, Fair Royalty Mariah Munson had
Amy Cederquist put the finishing touches
on her! |
|
|
All the hard
work began paying off as judging began
Wednesday morning, even though opening
ceremonies were hours away. |
Judges, who
traveled to Bonners Ferry from around
the region, brought with them a wealth
of knowledge they shared with those who
entered livestock, art, photography,
crafts, flowers, produce or the many
other wonderful things made and produced
in this county, such as these 4-H
members who entered the 4-H poultry
contest. |
|
|
All the
effort paid off for Crysta McLeish, a
member of the Groom n' Cleaners 4-H
Club, and her hen, Buttercup ... who
took first place in both showmanship and
quality ... |
... and for
Kimberly Kramer, who took reserve
champion with her hen, Houdini! |
|
|
One of this
year's youngest fair-goers was little
boy Incan Majesty, held by owner Anna
Amoth as Mom Incan Lady looks on. The
little llama, already frisky if not
quite having figured out that whole
"balance" thing, was born on Tuesday and
is just one day old. |
Even though
the fair hadn't "officially" opened,
there were still a lot of hungry people,
and folks ready to feed them. Here
Conrad Garner helps out at the Badger
Booster concession ... |
|
|
Where those
who waited on all the customers, as well
as cook for them, were none other than
Bonners Ferry Badger cheerleaders and
members of the Dance Team! They all put
in a lot of hard work and did a great
job for their school! |
Of course,
the Badger Boosters weren't the only
rivals for filling grumbling bellies ...
there is an awful lot to choose from at
the Boundary County Fair, no matter what
tempts your tastebuds! Here "Border" Bob
Hovish loads down a customer with some
delectable barbecue ... |
|
|
... While
just across the way, Eldon Rush is
serving up some fine New York Style
Italian sausage sandwiches, a treat many
here wait for all year long! |
And you
didn't even have to go to them for the
food! In some cases, the food came right
to you! Here, sisters Annamae and Rachel
Johnson, offering tasty fresh mangoes
with chili power with lime from Mario's
Mexican Restaurant's concession, discuss
sales strategy. |
|
|
Of course, a
county fair wouldn't be a county fair
without elephant ears, and Just Donuts
is carrying on the tradition from their
booth on the slab. |
As time for opening ceremonies drew
near, more and more people began showing
up, including District 1 Representative
George Eskridge, visiting here with Jane
Kirby ... |
|
|
Who attended
the affair with her husband, County
Commissioner Walt Kirby, who stopped to
chat with Don Carter at the Shriner's
popcorn booth. Commissioners Ron Smith
and Dan Dinning were also in attendance,
as was Bonners Ferry Mayor Dave
Anderson, most of the city council, the
mayor and council of Moyie Springs and
District 1 Senator Shawn Keough. |
Not that everyone paid heed to all
the personages in our midst. Little
Lexie Fodge thought it was just great to
go walking on air with two of her
buddies ... |
|
|
... And a
wise-cracking robot at the Discovery van
who throught it was more fun to impress
people with his technological wizardry
than to hob-nob with the "county elite." |
Or Debbie
Weland, who refused to let the year go
by without getting at least ONE elephant
ear!
The Boundary County Fair continues
through Saturday, August 20, and there's
a lot more fun still ahead. DON'T MISS
IT ... IT'S OUT OF THIS WORLD! |
