If there's a
more beautiful place on Earth than the
Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge, such
places are few and far between. |
A group of local people working to show off one
of the gems of Boundary County, the Kootenai
National Wildlife Refuge, have gone on-line,
showing people around the world all that awaits
them just a short drive from downtown Bonners
Ferry.
Many of us locals take the refuge for granted,
going out to visit only when we need a little
time with nature. The Friends of the Kootenai
National Wildlife Refuge (KNWR Friends),
however, know that such a place is a rarity, and
well worth telling the world about.
The new site not only shows people planning a
visit or just passing through Boundary County a
unique point of interest, but also provides a
way to connect people who know and love the
refuge and want to share its wonders with
others. It provides not only pictures of the
Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge, its wildlife,
it's points of interest and other pertinent
information for those who want to visit, but
times, dates and locations of events and
activities that are taking place there and the
times, dates and locations that the KNWR Friends
of the Refuge meet.
Standard membership in KNWR Friends is free, and
you can sign up to find out about upcoming
events and programs as well as volunteer
opportunities to bring you closer to all the
refuge has to offer just by visiting their
website (which is not being revealed yet!), or
by sending an email to
knwrfriends@gmail.com, giving your name and
email contact information. If you include your
mailing address, you will also recieve a
membership card to use to make it easier to fit
in at meetings and also to show at National
Parks and National Wildlife Refuge Association
stores for discounts on purchases.
If you agree to pay $10 with your membership,
you'll also receive a "Silver Membership," which
includes "A Birder's Guide to the Selkirk Loop,"
a waterproof map with extensive information
about birding in this wonderful region that you
can take into the field with you.
For $15, you'll be a "gold member" and receive a
copy of the "Idaho Birds" field guide by Stan
Tekiela, an excellent guide for beginning and
expert birders alike. For a mere $25, you become
a "platinum member," and get it all!
The reason for no mention of the website's URL,
or web address until now, is that it is a long
one,
http://friendsofkootenainationalwildliferefuge.org,
and a bit tough to type in. Instead of typical
blue links, the site uses red, which may be easy
to miss. Much easier, if you're interested in
joining, to
click here to fill out the on-line
application.
For us old farts, it just might be easier to
by-pass the technology altogether, and write or
call;
