John Perley Dicus passed away quietly in his
Spokane Valley home on July 21, 2017, after a
long battle with pancreatic cancer. The family
is hosting a Celebration of Life at 2 p.m.
Sunday, October 15, at Broadway Elementary,
E11016 Broadway, Spokane Valley.
Please come and share your memories of John with
family and friends.
He was born in Omak, Washington, on October 15,
1938, and was the oldest of three children born
to Mark and Marian Dicus.
John grew up in Bonner’s Ferry and graduated
from Bonner’s Ferry High School in 1957. He
worked at various jobs before joining the Air
Force in 1961. He married Raellen Reed and they
had two children; Don and Christine.
The family lived in the Spokane Valley, where
they were active in their church and scouting.
John enjoyed bowling and square dancing and was
an avid gardener. He won many awards for his
prize vegetables at the fair.
John and Raellen divorced after 27 years. He
later married Verna (Krogh), who had a daughter,
Carrie, and a son, Grover, from a previous
marriage.
John worked for Central Valley School District
before retiring in 2006. In retirement, he
continued his gardening, but also enjoyed
bicycling, walking his dogs, camping and caring
for his grandchildren. He loved to watch old
westerns and football, as well as any sport in
which his grandchildren participated. He also
pitched a mean game of horseshoes.
John collected belt buckles, caps, hats, movies
and anything John Wayne. He collected many loyal
friends as well, who supported him throughout
his illness. He will be greatly missed by all.
John is survived by his wife of 25 years, Verna,
son, Don (Kim) Dicus, daughter Christine (Bob)
Springsteen, stepdaughter Carrie (Morgan)
Koudelka, stepson Grover (Hallie) Krogh,
grandchildren Christopher, Benjamin, Emily Joy,
Emily Grace, Noah and Leilah, and new great
grandson, Mason. He is also survived by his
brother, Everett Dicus, sister Eva Bell, aunts
Ina Hanford and Lucille (Bill) Alexander,
mother-in-law Evelyn Thompson and well as many
cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family extends a special thank you to
Hospice of Spokane for keeping John comfortable
physically as well as spiritually in his final
days. The battle was long and hard, but John is
finally at peace.
Arrangements are entrusted to Heritage Funeral
